The German athletics star Leo Neugebauer showed light and shadow at the start of the season. After the first day in Götzis, the 24-year-old is in fifth place.
The Olympic second collected 4,543 points on the first day in Götzis and 142 less than in his German record (8961) in June 2024. Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico took the lead with 4,652 points.
Neugebauer started strong, ran over 100 m in 10.66 seconds the third best time of his career and also convinced when it was long jump with 7.91 m. But then the Olympic second in its paraded discipline left shot put with 15.93 m as well as in the high jump (2.00 m), over 400 m he finished after 47.84 seconds. The 9,000 points hoped for should already be out of reach.
Niklas Kaul in 13th place
The Swiss Simon Ehammer (4620 points) is in second place, which caused a highlight in the long jump with 8.34 m. World champion Pierce Lepage (Canada/4315) is only eleventh, the former world and European champion Niklas Kaul (Mainz/4257) follows 13th place. Olympic champion Markus Rooth (Norway) is not at the start in Austria.
