The rescue operation was difficult due to various setbacks. The emergency workers had to dig the last meters by hand and with small tools, because all machines had previously failed. Finally, the last section of a pipe reached the tunnel workers today. It had a diameter of 90 centimeters and was therefore large enough to get the construction workers outside.

The freed men are doing well despite the circumstances, says a disaster service employee. Outside the tunnel, relatives and ambulances were waiting for the workers. The men are taken to a hospital for a medical check.

The construction workers became trapped in a space more than 8 meters high and 2 kilometers long, after the road tunnel under construction collapsed due to a landslide. They remained unharmed and have recently been given food, water and medicine through a small tube. Last week, the men also received a camera through the same route to communicate with the outside world.

The tunnel is part of the Char Dham highway project. This is intended to improve connections with four Hindu sites and with the regions bordering China.

The new tunnel must be 4.5 kilometers long. The collapsed section is located approximately 200 meters from the tunnel entrance.
