Alexander Zverev wins his first Grand Slam title. The joy is not only huge for him, but also for other greats of German sport.
On Sunday Alexander Zverev wrote German tennis history. In the final of the French Open, the Hamburg native beat Flavio Cobolli and thus secured his first Grand Slam title. It was also the first triumph by a German gentleman at one of the four major tennis tournaments since 1996 – Boris Becker celebrated back then.
The ex-professional, now working as a TV expert, cheered again on Sunday. “He deserves it. If a player deserves it in the world rankings, after all the years of work, desperation, disappointment, he more than deserves it,” he said happily for his compatriot at Eurosport. “I’m very proud of him. The way is unusual – from the fight to the game. Now he is enjoying his best moments on the tennis court.”

There, on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Zverev went down immediately after the last rally and lay in the sand for seconds. “The pictures speak for themselves. A lifelong dream comes true,” observed Becker. “He had a lot of pressure and felt like a loser until now, as he said. He changed that today. He turned over a new page. He is a Grand Slam champion.”
Zverev’s triumph also caused Thomas Müller great joy. “Come on! Sascha!” the footballer shouted in a video he published on Instagram. A sequence of strange sounds followed: Müller snorted, laughed, grumbled. “Yes,” he added another word. The joy is unmistakable.
