Rescue operations are underway, while the tsunami alert was lifted after four hours
A strong earthquake hit the southern Philippines tonightcausing several collapses, at least fifteen victims and a tsunami warning also extended to Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan. The strong tremor was recorded shortly before midnight in Italy, with a magnitude of 7.8 and epicenter a few miles off the coast of the island of Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines.

The first budget, to be considered provisional, is at least 15 people were killed by the collapses and 129 injuredas announced this morning by the Office of Civil Defense, according to which 12 victims were recorded in the area most affected by the earthquake, the Soccsksargen region where the city of General Santos is located. There, according to local authorities, the most important collapses occurred.
“Many residential buildings were hit by the earthquake, we are engaged in rescue operations,” Sergeant Major told the press Robert Dagon of the General Santos police, according to whom the rescue operations are made more complex by the continuous aftershocks: at least 138 minor tremors were recorded in the following hours to the strong shock, with a magnitude between 1.3 and 6.7.

Immediately after the strong earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center promptly issued a tsunami warning, inviting citizens in the coastal areas of the Philippines, but also Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan to move away from the coast until further notice. The tsunami warning was officially lifted after four hoursafter waves up to 0.75 meters high hit the small island of Sangihe, Indonesia, without causing damage.
