The jubilant mood at Ajax Women has come to an end again. The Amsterdam team recorded a sensational first victory in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, but lost to FC Twente today. At De Toekomst the leader was too strong with 1-0.
Naturally, expectations were high for Ajax Women. There was joy in the Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday evening after superpower Paris Saint-Germain was defeated (2-0). Ajax Women could not reach that level against FC Twente. After 22 minutes Renate Janssen opened the score for Twente. The international shot the ball into the far corner behind Ajax goalie Regina van Eijk.
National coach Andries Jonker sat in the stands and saw Ajax Women increasingly hunting for the equalizer. Via Romée Leuchter and Nadine Noordam were close. Noordam was the most dangerous with a hard bang against the crossbar.
FC Twente kept the goal clean and inflicted Ajax Women’s first league defeat of the season. The Tukkers remain undefeated and strengthen their leading position in the Premier League. The Amsterdam team is stuck in third place with sixteen points. The difference with FC Twente is five points.
