Ajax Amsterdam extend contract with Jurrien Timber and sell Perr Schuurs

No club in the world conceded more

It was an open secret that coach Erik ten Hag would like to bring his former Ajax protégé Jurrien Timber to his new club Manchester United. The 21-year-old central defender has now extended his contract in Amsterdam by another year. The Dutch were able to prevail and bind the international until 2025. On the other hand, defense partner Perr Schuurs is moving to FC Turin and driving the income in the capital to the 500 million mark in recent years.

The Eredivisie champion has one thing to worry about first: That homegrown defense Timber would have to be sold now so that he doesn’t have to be sold next year like Ryan Gravenberch (20), who has just switched to Bayern, because of a short remaining contract. The former team-mate went to Munich with a contract that expired in 2023 for a cheap 18.5 million euros, although his market value, like that of Timbers, is estimated at 35 million euros. With a new working paper until 2025 instead of just 2024, Ajax can start the new season with Timber with confidence and will probably have to deal with the same question next summer.

Born in Utrecht, the young professional came to Ajax as a 13-year-old from the Feyenoord youth team and made the leap into the professional team in 2020. Since then he has made 77 appearances for the first team. Since the June update in the Eredivisie, Timber has been the most valuable player in the league alongside team-mate Antony (22).

Schuurs moves to Turin – No club in the world conceded more than Ajax

After Lisandro Martínez (for €57m to Man United), another central defender will leave Ajax Amsterdam. Perr Schuurs joins FC Torino. The clubs have agreed on a basic fee of 9 million euros for the 22-year-old, as announced by Ajax. With bonuses, the amount could increase to up to EUR 11.3 million.

With the basic fee, Ajax exceeds the 120 million mark in revenue in the current transfer window. Only in 2019/20, with the sales of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, did the Amsterdam team rake in even higher income. Since the summer transfer window three years ago, a total of over €490 million has come from player sales. No club in the world has recorded higher income since then. Just over 230 million euros were again invested in newcomers during this period.
