After a worrying incident, Alexander Zverev won his opening duel at the tournament in Halle/Westphalia.
The finalist from 2016 and 2017 sat 6-2, 6-1 against the American Marcos Giron and successfully started his Wimbledon general rehearsal.
In the first sentence there was a game interruption. Part of an advertising table fell into the scene on a spectator.
Zverev immediately gave an ice pack to the stands for care, the man apparently affected was able to leave the stadium with medical support and with applause from the audience.
Zverev was the last remaining German professional to start the tournament. Daniel Altmaier (Kempen), Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) had already left before the 28-year-old.
Born in Hamburg, Zverev now meets the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in his round of 16.
