After record drought now record rainfall in southern Spain: 130 liters per square meter in one day | Abroad

The regions of Murcia, Valencia and Andalusia have been particularly hard hit. In the city of Cartagena (Murcia) on the Mediterranean Sea, cars were almost up to the roof in water.

In some places in the Valencia region, more rain fell in a few days than in the past six months combined, according to the national weather agency. The town of Ontinyent (see also Twitter videos below) broke the record for the most rainfall in a single day in May in the past hundred years, with up to 130 liters per square meter.

This rainfall can help the effects of the long-lasting drought ravaging Spain to decrease. The country was on track to record its driest spring since records began in 1961. National precipitation between October 2022 and May 21 this year was more than a quarter lower than the average for that period.
