After countless setbacks, Holstein Kiel has set an exclamation mark in the Bundesliga. The newcomer celebrated its second win of the season in the 15th game before the winter break with a 5:1 (4:1) win against FC Augsburg and is gaining new courage in the fight to stay in the league.
Lasse Rosenboom (12th minute), Phil Harres (32nd, 35th) and Shuto Machino (39th, 90th + 1) scored the goals for coach Marcel Rapp’s team. The Kiel team recently suffered five defeats in a row. Alexis Claude-Maurice (5th) put the guests in the lead. Despite the victory, Holstein remains in a relegation zone.
Kiels Rapp is proud, pain before Christmas at Augsburg’s Thorup
Kiel coach Marcel Rapp was very satisfied after the game in the Sportschau interview: “I’m really proud of the team. We were behind, but everyone was there for each other. Then you saw what the boys can do, and it was a decent game in terms of football. What the boys have torn down is worthy of honor.“
“It’s difficult to explain”said Augsburg coach Jess Thorup. “I’m sorry for the fans. We wanted to send a signal that we can do more away from home. We concede five goals, that can’t happen, we have to deal with it better as a team. That hurts before Christmas.”
Augsburg start made to measure
Augsburg got off to a dream start. Samuel Essende evaded his opponents on the left and passed it back to Claude-Maurice, who scored his fourth goal of the season.

But the joy of taking the lead didn’t last long. First, defender Keven Schlotterbeck had to be replaced injured, then Kiel used the resulting disorder to equalize. Shuto Machino prepared, Rosenboom scored.
Kiels Harres puts together the double pack
Augsburg shook itself briefly and had a great chance to take the lead again through Phillip Tietz (22′), but then only the hosts played. The strong Machino also prepared the second goal for Harres, who scored a brace just three minutes later.
Kiel played itself into a bit of a frenzy, almost every shot hit. Machino crowned his brilliant performance with a converted free kick to make it 4-1 before the break. Augsburg was visibly impressed, almost all of the duels in this phase went to the hosts. Shortly before the break, Kristijan Jakic (43′) and Chrislain Matsima (45’+3) missed good opportunities for the guests.
Kiel’s Machino brings the final point
The second half started much quieter. Kiel concentrated on being secure defensively. Augsburg tried to catch up, but coach Jess Thorup’s team lacked ideas. Matsima also aimed too imprecisely (55th).
But Kiel became more and more passive and isolated themselves around their own penalty area. But Augsburg didn’t punish that. On the contrary: Machino brought it to a close.
