No encore (and 11th title) for the Egyptians of Al Ahly, defeated by a brace from El Moutaraj in the single race in Casablanca

Wydad beat Al Ahly 2-0 in the home final in Casablanca thanks to a brace from Zouhair El Moutaraj and are African champions. For the Moroccans this is the third continental title, after those of 1992 and 2017. The Cairo team instead sees the 11th triumph fade and abdicates after last year’s success in the double final with the South Africans of the Kaizer Chiefs.

The controversy over the choice of venue, carried out between the first leg and the return semi-final (with Wydad who had already won 3-1 in Luanda and was therefore almost certain to play the final) never went away. In fact, the Egyptians weren’t completely wrong … It is certainly better to go back to the old formula with round-trip races.

the match

The game is released immediately: after a quarter of an hour Zouhair El Moutaraj concocts a masterpiece goal, throwing a ball from over twenty meters that slips into the “seven” behind El Shenawy with a perfect parabola. The Egyptians try to react, they create a couple of head chances with the ball touching the post but it goes to the break 1-0 for the hosts.

At the start of the second half, the doubling: El Moutaraj anticipates the defender with a paw on a cross from the left, the goalkeeper of Al Ahly does not hold back and the tap in for the brace of the number 7 is just a formality. At 73 ‘it was the Moroccan goalkeeper who blocked Afsha’s shot in a dive. The Egyptians poured forward and touched the goal in the 83rd minute with two shots returned from a few steps. They are the last emotions.
