Mali and South Africa are in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. Mali defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 (1-0) on Wednesday evening and South Africa then beat Morocco 2-0 (0-0). This means that all pairings for the round of the last eight have been determined.

Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba initiated Mali’s victory with an own goal in the 3rd minute. The Bayer defender wanted to clear the ball out of the goal, but it hit the goal of his teammate Hervé Koffi. Lassine Sinayoko (47′) extended the lead shortly after half-time and nothing more happened after Bertrand Traoré’s goal (57′). The Malian selection around Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara and Hoffenheim’s Diadié Samassékou will now face hosts Ivory Coast on Saturday (6 p.m.).

Meanwhile, South Africa will face Cape Verde on the same evening. Bafana Bafana took the lead against Morocco in the 57th minute thanks to Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena made the decision late in stoppage time. Shortly before, ex-BVB professional Achraf Hakimi missed a penalty (85th). With Morocco, Noussair Mazraoui celebrated his comeback after more than a month out due to injury – as a left-back. Leverkusen’s Amine Adli was also in the starting line-up. Both were replaced.
