“Absurd” claim in the Sala case

The Welsh football club Cardiff City is not giving up in the dispute over the transfer fee for the Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane accident.

City initiated legal action in a civil court in Nantes, the first hearing is scheduled for June 22. According to the lawyers of the French first division club FC Nantes, Cardiff is demanding 100 million euros.

“After Cardiff failed at FIFA, CAS and the Swiss Federal Court, they have now opened a new, absurd front,” said the lawyers of the AFP news agency: “Cardiff had initially estimated its so-called damage at 17 million euros, this was rejected . Now they put the loss at 100 million.”

Cardiff had only transferred the first installment of six million euros to Nantes in January. The Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS had previously rejected an appeal by the Welsh people against a corresponding decision by the world association FIFA.

In January 2019, Sala’s machine crashed into the English Channel two days after the signing in Cardiff, and the pilot also died. Since then there has been disagreement between the clubs about the financial consequences. According to Cardiff, the transfer wasn’t fully completed.
