Ilta-Sanomat reported on Tuesday that a man who was drowned on Kivenlahti beach in Espoo Owolabi rabiu.
The 20-year-old Rabiu represented the A-juniors of Haukilahti Pallo (Hoogee) in Espoo and a representative team playing in the men’s third. HooGee Chairman Janne Maijala confirmed this to IS.
Western Uusimaa police reported at the time of the drowning in late July that according to that information, the man had jumped off the dock and had not risen to the surface thereafter. The search lasted about half an hour before the man was found.
The death of a kept player has deeply touched the HooGe club community. Maijala told IS that a Nigerian player arrived in Finland as an asylum seeker in 2024 and ended up in the HooGe organization. Rabiu also worked as an assistant coach on several HooGe junior teams.
Rabiu recently received a new four -year work permit in Finland.
This season, Rabiu played in third 11 matches and scored three goals.
The memory was respected
HooGee respected Rabiu’s memory in connection with the third match played on July 31.
After the match reportedthat voluntary entry fees and coffee service revenue were directed to the club’s social fund.
– Hooge and its partners have promised to support the amount collected in Rabiu in Nigeria (up to EUR 2000) and cover funeral and nesting costs. This goal was exceeded! The Rabiu family also sent a big thank you for remembering and helping their son/sibling, HooGee said on his Instagram account.
