A tough challenge, playing an instrument within ten weeks: “Disappointing”

Never played a note or even touched a musical instrument, but still try to play a saxophone, trumpet or trombone within 10 weeks: you just have to dare. New Talent Orchestra Hollands Kroon takes up the challenge with 27 participants, in the Laurenskerk in Kolhorn.

The idea to enthuse people to play a wind or percussion instrument came from initiators and music lovers Annewiep Bloem and Guus Pieksma. At the end of last year, they initiated the New Talent Orchestra in the Noordkop and are also doing this in other places in the Netherlands.

But Guus and Annewiep are not alone. They are reinforced by musicians from various music associations in the Noordkop, so that each participant receives enough personal guidance to master the instrument. And everyone is welcome. “There are many people here who have never made music or can’t even read music,” says Annewiep.

Right tone

Some participants are fast learners and quickly know how to play the right tone, but that is not the case for everyone. Drummer Jan Reitsma thought he had mastered his talent from 30 years ago, but almost immediately had to start all over again. “I find it terribly disappointing”, Jan agrees, “The whole hand and foot coordination was gone.”

A few more lessons and then the participants will share with the general public what they have learned over the past few months. And that is always a special moment for Annewiep. “Because every time it’s great to hear and see how fanatical people are and how good they actually are.”

On Saturday 21 January, the New Talent Orchestra Hollands Kroon will give the closing concert at 3 p.m. in the Laurenskerk in Kolhorn.
