Nascar star Denny Hamlin has faced a heavy family tragedy. The driver’s father Dennis Hamlin is dead and mother Mary Lou Hamlin seriously injured in a fire in North Carolina, USA, says ESPN.
According to the authorities, the fire broke out local time Sunday evening in a two-story detached house in Stanley. When the rescue service arrived, the building was already largely engulfed in flames.
The fire damaged the house so badly that the structures eventually collapsed.
75-year-old Dennis Hamlin and 69-year-old Mary Lou Hamlin were found outside the house with serious injuries. Dennis Hamlin later died of his injuries at the hospital.
Mary Lou Hamlin was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
45-year-old Denny Hamlin is one of Nascar’s brightest stars. He has won 60 Cup Series races in his career, including the legendary Daytona 500 three times.
However, the championship in Nascar’s main series has yet to be achieved.
Hamlin said earlier in the fall that his father was struggling with a serious illness and hinted that he would not have much time left.
– I know for sure that this is my last chance to win the championship against my father. I don’t want him to leave without having time to experience that moment, Hamlin told the AP news agency, according to ESPN, a few weeks before the tragedy.
