A protest against Desokupa bursts into the plenary session of Premià de Dalt

  • The protesters have forced the suspension of the plenary session, which was resumed shortly after behind closed doors

Nearly a hundred people have staged this Tuesday at the gates of the City Hall of Dalt Award (Maresme) one protest against the contracting by the mayor, Josep Triadó, of the Desokupa company -a contract that was rescinded on Friday- and they have forced suspend the town hall which was being celebrated in the town hall. The plenary session resumed shortly after, but this time behind closed doors.

The protest had been called by the Xarxa Habitatge del Baix Maresme to denounce the hiring of Desokupa for advisory tasks facing criminal occupations. Less than a hundred people, most of them young and many from outside the municipality, according to some neighbors who were watching with curiosity, have broken into the plenary session shouting “fascists get out of our towns.”

The Xarxa spokeswoman, microphone in hand, has denounced the contract of Daniel Esteve’s “Nazi” company. “We don’t want Desokupa. The solution to the housing problem is not threats,” the young woman proclaimed, denouncing that “Premià de Dalt is a pioneer in bringing in Nazis.” “We want security but not hiring Nazis.” Her companions have chanted her to the cry of “Triadó, resignation”. The mayor has tried to take the floor but since it was not possible, he has made the decision to suspend the plenary session.

Outside, in the square, two demonstrators have read a manifesto in which the presence of “thugs” has been rejected and Daniel Esteve’s company, whom they have described as “unscrupulous Nazis”, has been accused of “attacking against migrants and poor whenever he can”. The text has also charged against politicians: “We did not reach the end of the month and they do not help us. Instead, they send the police to kick us out. The police defend the bourgeoisie.”

Triadó announced last Monday the hiring of Desokupa for advice on criminal occupations that affect the municipality in the season from October to March, coinciding with winter time. It was a preventive contract, he said, because right now there are no mafia occupations in the municipality. And he justified it for the sake of the safety of the neighbors and given the impotence felt by the municipality and the police in the face of this type of occupation.

Last Friday, shortly after Esteve offered its services for free, the city council and the company mutually agreed to terminate the controversial contract. However, the resignation instance includes that Desokupa will advise the Local Police on occupation issues free of charge if they consider it necessary.
