An unusual construction project is starting next to the town hall in Mitte: a house only for women who love women. The 72 apartments should be ready in October 2025.
The waiting list of interested tenants is long. It has been planned for about ten years. And not every wish of the lesbian initiative RuT-FrauenKultur as a general tenant was fulfilled by the city planning office in Mitte – so a coat of paint in rainbow colors or shades of purple was refused. Didn’t fit the area.
Construction is going on behind the International cinema
The building site is a former parking lot behind the international cinema. The asphalt is being cleared. The state-owned WBM will erect the eight-story building. City Councilor Ephraim Gothe (59, SPD): “We are proud to be able to support this project as a district.”
Half of the apartments are subsidized, so starting rents of 6.90 euros/sqm are possible. A public neighborhood café will also move in.
“As a Europe-wide groundbreaking project, the planned residential project and queer cultural center stands for lesbian and queer visibility and gender justice,” says Jutta Brambach, head of RuT.
