With that, the queen has to cancel another event where she would normally be present. In February she tested positive for corona and although she would have had mild complaints, she had to cancel all kinds of virtual audiences.
According to insiders, the 95-year-old queen is not ill, but has to deal with old age complaints. A source tells the British newspaper The Mirror: “The Queen is still as alert, capable and interested as ever, but physically she is not as strong as before. Which is completely understandable for a woman of her age.”
First time since 1993
It is striking that she misses Commonwealth Day. The last time was in 1993, when she had the flu. Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla are in attendance, as are Prince William and Duchess Kate. On Commonwealth Day, the British commemorate the bond between the countries of the Commonwealth (54 independent sovereign states in the former colonies and mandates† Affectionately referred to as the ‘family of nations’, the Commonwealth played an important role during Elizabeth’s reign. That is why it is such a special event for her.
“After consulting with the court, the Queen has asked Charles to represent her at the service at Westminster Abbey,” the source said. She is expected to resume personal audiences this week.
