Van Engelen stood on the dike near Marken, one of his favorite locations to photograph the Noorderlicht in Noord-Holland. Normally a chance on the Northern Lights pulls quite a few people out, but this time he was alone. Probably because the chance was not that great according to the predictions. “But I went anyway,” he says.
According to the Purmerend photographer, the Northern Lights will be seen more often in the coming months. That has everything to do with the so -called ‘Solar Maxim’, which is currently in full swing. During this peak in solar activity, which occurs about once every eleven, the chance of Noorderlicht in the Netherlands is greater than normal.
After this period, the solar activity will slowly decrease again until the cycle starts again.
