On the recommendation of State Secretary Struycken (Legal Protection), the Council of Ministers approved the appointment of 2 new Laws General to the Supreme Court. Prof. SE (Steven) Bartels and Mrs. VMA (Vanessa) Sinnige will be appointed on 1 September 2025.
Prof. Bartels will be part of the Civil Law section. Mrs. Sinnige becomes part of the Criminal Law section.
Prof. Bartels is professor of civil law at Radboud University Nijmegen and he was previously professor of property law and notarial law at Utrecht University. He was also a counselor in the Court of Appeal ‘s-Hertogenbosch and judge-replacement in the Gelderland District Court. Mrs. Sinnige is already deputy Advocate General at the Supreme Court. She previously worked as a counselor in the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and the judge in the Central Netherlands court.

These so -called conclusions are serious legal advice in matters that are present in cassation at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the highest court in civil, criminal and tax matters. As the highest court, the Supreme Court can judge judicial judgments against which cassation appeal is open. The Supreme Court then assesses whether the law has been applied correctly, whether the correct procedures have been followed and whether a decision is sufficient and understandable.
