Marc-André Ter Stegen works for his comeback. From Julian Nagelsmann there was a regular place guarantee – with small restrictions.

Marc-André Ter Stegen is ambitious on his comeback-and has obviously made some progress. FC Barcelona released a training video with parades of his goalkeeper on Saturday. In it, Ter Stegen drew the balls like in its best times and demonstrated impressive reflexes.

The recordings awaken hopes for an early comeback by the 32-year-old who has been out for months due to a patella tendon tear. But an exact date for his return remains uncertain. He still has the support of his club and that of national coach Julian Nagelsmann.

“He stays our number one when he returns fit and healthy,” said Nagelsmann as part of the National League game against Italy and added: “He deserved to play a big tournament. We give him the time.” After many years as number two behind Manuel Neuer in the DFB goal, Ter Stegen hopes to fulfill his big dream: he wants to be the clear number one at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

However, Nagelsmann warned that setbacks were not excluded. “He is making good progress. Nevertheless, it was a serious injury he has. And first we have to see what the development is, of course in the short -term and also in the long -term nature towards a World Cup,” said the national coach.

For the upcoming games in the Nations League, Nagelsmann relied on Oliver Baumann as a temporary solution. The 34-year-old Hoffenheimer received preference in the duel with Alexander Nübel. “After the two games, we will decide again,” announced Nagelsmann before the quarter-final first leg against Italy (2-1). Should Baumann convince, he could also stand in the goal for the games in June.

First of all, the German national team is about moving into the final Four. This Sunday is the quarter-finals against Italy in the Dortmund Signal Iduna Park (from 8.45 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online). The Nagelsmann team has a slight advantage through the 2-1 in the first leg.
