A good three months after his serious traffic accident, Mikhail Antonio first spoke about how close he got away with life. “I almost died,” said West Ham United’s striker in “BBC” interview. The 34-year-old drove his Ferrari against a tree in early December and had broken his thigh at four different places, among other things.
The Jamaican international had to stay in the hospital for more than three weeks. The team-mate of DFB professional Niclas Füllkrug (32) is now fighting for his comeback. Antonio said that he assumes 100 percent of playing again. In rehab he was even ahead of the plan – but he did not give a specific date for his return to training.
“In total, it will probably take six to twelve months for my leg to heal properly,” says Antonio, whose way back to the square currently requires countless hours in the gym. “I concentrate on that and that’s why I work six days a week.” Even if it was a terrible accident, he always had a positive conflict with the situation.
“It is the most serious injury that I have ever had in my career. “I was one of the fastest at West Ham.
He has often gone through difficult situations. “People always doubted me. Psychological support helped with which he already managed the death of his father and the failure of his marriage. “Therapy is one of the best things that happened to me in my life.”
West Hams Antonio about car accident: neither drugs nor alcohol
At the same time, Antonio countered speculations that he might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the crash. “I never took drugs in my life,” he said. And that day he didn’t drink alcohol either. This was confirmed by the police.
Actually, he wanted to take another car for training, added Antonio. But because he was “too lazy” to get a few bags out of that car – which his partner asked him – he took the recently purchased sports car, with which he actually did not feel completely comfortable. “I had had him for three weeks and thought of returning him,” said Antonio. The rear has broken out again and again. In the middle of a storm, he crashed into a tree. He could no longer remember the rescue measures and other scenes that day.

Antonio looked at the wreck of the car for the first time three weeks ago. “I had a strange feeling in my stomach. “I saw the pictures, but in reality it was ten times the car. He had received “a new chance in life”.
The six -time family man reported that he had been more emotional since the accident than before. “But that feels better.” Although he was always a fan of fast cars, after his second accident he would avoid such companions with a sports car, he announced. “I can’t deny it: sports cars are not my friends.”
