Atlético Madrid equalized the deficit from the first leg against city rival Real with a very early goal. Only the penalty shootout brought the decision.
Defending champion Real Madrid fought himself in the quarter -finals of the Champions League. In a fierce round of round of 16 at Stadtrival Atlético Madrid, from the point of view of the team of coach Carlo Ancelotti, it was 0: 1 after 90 minutes with an early goal by Atléticos Conor Gallagher (1. Minute). But due to the 2-1 advance from the first leg, we went into the extension and then into the penalty shootout. Real Superstar Vinícius Junior had awarded the opportunity to make an earlier decision in the 70th minute when he missed a penalty.
In the penalty shootout, the royal – without the previously replaced Vinícius – kept their nerves. DFB defender Antonio Rüdiger converted the decisive penalty with plenty of luck. Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak was on the ball with his hands.
Previously, Julián Álvarez and Marcos Llorente shot their attempts for Atlético. At Real, only Lucas Vázquez failed the nerves. In particular, the Álvarez penalty took a curious course: the Argentine world champion slipped away, but still transformed. The video evidence (VAR), however, realized that he had easily shot the ball on his own main leg, so that the hit did not count.
Real Madrid remains in the Champions League with Atléticos Kryptonit. Real had always prevailed against the city rival in the Champions League – in the final 2014, in the 2015 quarter -finals, in the 2016 final and in the 2017 semi -finals.
In the quarter -finals, Real now meets Arsenal FC, which clearly prevailed against PSV Eindhoven. The first leg will take place on April 8 or 9. The second leg will then increase on April 15 or 16.
