Berlin (dpa -AFX) – More than 40 mayors and mayors appeal to the Union, SPD and Greens to reform the debt brake and to anchor climate protection in the Basic Law. This emerges from an open letter to the chairpersons of the three factions, which is present to the newspapers of the Funke media group.
“Modernization and progress are implemented at the local level,” it says. Buildings would have to be renovated energetically, climate-friendly energy and transport infrastructure, and schools, bridges and streets are modernized. These are not just investments in the future. Such measures also improved quality of life, social cohesion and trust in politics and democracy.
Climate protection as a joint task of the federal and state governments
In addition, climate protection should be written in the constitution as a so -called joint task. Community tasks are areas that the federal and state governments are financed together despite separate responsibilities. The improvement of the regional economic and agricultural structure and coastal protection are already stipulated in the Basic Law.
According to the report, the undersigned of the open letter include Belit Onay, Mayor of Hanover, Katja Dörner, Mayor of Bonn (both Greens) and Thomas Spies (SPD), Mayor of Marburg. The letter initiated the organization German Zero, which work on climate neutrality in Germany until 2035./MI/DP/ZB
