Today’s hysteria ”by Silvia Ons. Paidós, 264 pgs., $ 29,900.

One of the characteristics of the investigations of Silvia Ons, a psychoanalyst of great experience, is to put in relation to the founding concepts of Freud and Lacan with the contributions of sociologists and philosophers of today. In this round trip in time, comparing models of thought, certain classic terms such as “hysteria” are resigned. In some cases, the notion to point out the effect of general social operations is “dematologized.” In others, interior anguish is denied to emphasize an external scene that affects everyone equally. “Hysteria today” travels in its chapters most of the scenarios of current sexuality, from feminism to transsexuality and virtual relations to polyamor. A deep reflection on the landscape of links in the era of social networks, to try to understand how we will relate in the future.

But his most remembered work is “Bear”, a text that reaches us in a beautiful edition of Impedita. When it was published, in 1976, the story caused a scandal. What is it about? Lou, the protagonist, works in the archive of a historical institute. It has a simple and lonely life. But everything changes when the institution is donated to a mansion on an uninhabited island, with an important library. Lou is sent to sign the books of the house, but the commission contains a surprise: it must also take care of a bear that lives on the island. Of the love that arises between them treats this novel. We do not give more details of the passion so as not to spoil the story. Is a metaphor of a certain kind of men “bear”? Or is it expression of the certainty that we can fall in love with anything? In any case, it is a delicious object, the best we can find today in our bookstores.
