Just after four hours, the driver of an Opel Meriva lost control of the steering wheel on the exit. The car came from Kortrijk. The vehicle dived on the left of the exit next to the start of the crash barrier, hit the head and came to a halt further down the canal, upside down. Two occupants hurled out of the wreck themselves. Then they called the emergency services.
All help came too late for a third occupant. The woman was probably thrown out of the car and ended up in the canal under the vehicle. The emergency services could only go to the remains after the car had been removed from the canal.
