For the 1st FSV Mainz 05, the great days continue after Fastnacht: The Mainz celebrates the fourth victory in series at Borussia Mönchengladbach and continue to storm towards Champions League.
The Mainz celebrated a 3-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach at the start of the 25th match day. After the fourth victory in series, the surprise team from Mainz climbed to third place with 44 points now – and can continue to dream of moving into the Champions League for the first time.
44 points after 25 game days-the Mainz people have never been better in their Bundesliga history at that time of the season. Mönchengladbach conceded the second home defeat in a row, but with 37 points the international places are still within reach.
With the victory in the Borussia Park, the Mainz continued their good series against Mönchengladbach: Mainz has lost none of the past nine duels against Gladbach in the Bundesliga. The Mainz are unbeaten against no other Bundesliga club.
Fog, Kohr and Amiri – three Mainz goals in Mönchengladbach
Paul Nebel scored in the 39th minute and in the middle of a Gladbach urge phase for the Mainz lead. Immediately after the restart, Mainz shocked the hosts for the second time, Dominik Kohr (48th) increased to 2-0 in the replacement of Nadiem Amiri’s free kick.
With the connection, Stefan Lainer made a new hope for the Gladbachers – which, however, quickly evaporated: Amiri made (77th) with a full shot from the penalty area for the Mainz 3: 1 and the decision.
With the past successful series in the back, the FSV had celebrated exuberantly on the Rose Monday parade at the beginning of the week. Coach Bo Henriksen apparently set his team on the opponent despite the short preparation time: the tentative Gladbach offensive efforts at the beginning bounced off the Mainz defensive. On the opposite side, Fohlen keeper Jonas Omlin, who had returned to Rotperre, did not have to intervene at Nebel’s long-distance shot next to the goal (18th) and the blocked conclusion of Phillip Mwene (20th).
Prevent hundredweight and latte Small service goal
However, this shaken up the hosts, who now took over the game control: Julian Weigl found Tim Kleindienst with his half -field flank, whose header Robin Zentner could not hold on – the ball went on the crossbar. Once again, it was the striker who was involved in the next dangerous situation: Small service put on the former Mainz Kevin Stöger, who slipped away (31st).
Then the FSV ended the pressure phase of the hosts by staging Burkardt Clever Jae Sung Lee. This found fog in the middle, Lukas Ullrich falsified the end of the Mainz lead.
After the restart, Mainz took the night chance – in the style of a top club: Amiri’s dangerous free -kick flank found the head of Kohr, who only failed on Omlin – but inserted the rebound. It was the first Bundesliga goal of the Mainz defender for over a year.
Shortly thereafter (59.), Nebel missed the possible preliminary decision against the brilliantly parrying Omlin – this made Gladbach strong again: Lainer, still in the first leg, was able to shorten. Coach Gerardo Seoane immediately brought three fresh forces – but Amiri’s goal for the 3-1 final score ended any hope of a possible Gladbach comeback.
Gladbach in Bremen, Mainz against Freiburg
Mainz will deal with SC Freiburg on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) on the 26th matchday and thus another European Cup aspirant. Gladbach also plays on Saturday afternoon at Werder Bremen.
