Hrgota and Kalajdzic miss chances
It took a good ten minutes before the people of Fürth realized that they didn’t need to hide from the Stuttgarters. A goal, however, did not succeed, although captain Branimir Hrgota came freely to the header from five meters, but aimed pretty precisely at the well-reacting goalkeeper Florian Müller (22nd).
The Stuttgarters had missed Kalajdzic, who had been missing for a long time, since the third match day – and with him his goals. The 24-year-old Austrian also had a good chance, but with an unplaced overhead kick in the six-yard area, he didn’t put any pressure behind the ball, Fürth’s goalkeeper Sascha Burchert had no trouble (26th).
A lot of patchwork
The inadequate exploitation of chances matched the level of the game. Stuttgart had more of the ball, but didn’t know what to do with it. The hosts also showed why they were at the bottom of the table. Too much was piecemeal on both sides, with the exception of opportunities for VfB in the final stages, good scoring opportunities were rare.
Anton clarifies in dire need
Fürth was also unable to take advantage of Stuttgart’s inadequacies. After a careless loss of the ball by Orel Mangala, Hrgota lifted the ball over goalkeeper Müller, but Waldemar Anton was there in time to clear the ball in front of the line (54th). At the rear, the “clover” could rely on its central defense.
At VfB, the danger mostly came from the combination of Borna and Sosa-Kalajdzic, including in the final stages of the game when the Austrian headed a corner kick just wide of the goal (77th). A little later he shot just over the goal (83rd) – it was the best chance of victory.
SpVgg Greuther Fürth has to play at Arminia Bielefeld on the next match day on Sunday (January 16, 2022), Stuttgart expects RB Leipzig the day before.
