Bayer Leverkusen conceded the next setback against Union Berlin

Bayer Leverkusen suffered the next setback in the fight for the Champions League at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga.

The team of coach Gerardo Seoane did not get beyond a 2: 2 (1: 1) against an extremely effective Union Berlin.

As a result, Bayer won their fourth league game in a row and slipped to fifth place. Union has now been unbeaten in three games and remains well in the race for a European Cup place.

Patrik Schick (38th) brought Bayer, who had to do without Nadiem Amiri, who tested positive for the coronavirus, in the lead with his 17th goal of the season. Out of nowhere, Grischa Prömel (45th / 50th) turned the game with the first two shots on goal and gave the guests a 2-1 lead. Then Jonathan Tah (84th) saved the point for Leverkusen late.

Bayer Leverkusen belongs to the initial phase

After the minute’s silence for the Leverkusen promotion coach Willibert Kremer, who passed away at the end of December and who led the works club into the Bundesliga in 1979, Bayer was in the initial phase.

Union keeper Andreas Luthe had to intervene twice early. First against a header from Schick (10th), in the next action the 34-year-old parried a shot from young international Florian Wirtz (11th). Defense chief Tah missed the head at the next corner.

With continuous sleet and sometimes strong wind, Union initially did not find the match at all. Despite significantly larger proportions of the game, Leverkusen couldn’t think of anything after the initially good chances against compact and low-lying guests. The Rhinelander looked far too seldom for the decisive pass in the interface at the edge of the penalty area.

A bright moment was enough to deserve to take the lead. After a strong opening ball from Kerem Demirbay, Moussa Diaby initially failed to Luthe, Schick shot the rebound powerfully into the mesh.

Tah hits the goal, Oczipka hits the post

But the joy only lasted for a surprisingly short time. With the first dangerous offensive scene, Prömel struck with a stab. Previously, Bayer goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, who had not been required to date, had twice reacted brilliantly.

Shortly after the break, the weak Mitchel Bakker and Piero Hincapie Prömel lost sight and pushed in again. It took a full quarter of an hour before Bayer recovered from the shock.

But Schick failed with his direct acceptance again because of the strong Luthe, who a few minutes later was there twice against Paulinho. Tah then redeemed the Werkself. Unions Bastian Oczipka (90th + 3) hit the post.
