A burglary among car builders from the flower parade in Valkenswaard has a lot of impact. Earlier this week, thieves struck on the construction site of Buurtschap Leenderweg. The damage is estimated at at least a thousand euros. “This eats on you,” sighs chairman Wil Lievens.

With a lot of love, the neighborhood has been building beautiful cars for more than seventy years. That is not rewarded in this case. The burglary happened in the night from Monday to Tuesday. Wil came to see a day later: “I saw that the gate was open and immediately knew that something was wrong.”

“The damage is the most annoying.” For example, a container lock has been forced and there is damage to the gate. “It seems like they were driving a car against the gate.”

The loot? “Electrum motors, boxes with plugs, two sawing machines and two steps. Especially copper items.” They also brought chandeliers. They hang in the tent during the construction period. “What they should do with that again? I don’t know”, sighs.

Angry
“I am very angry. That strangers come to your site. It does something with your sense of security,” notes Wil. “I’m afraid they will come back again. You now look at the construction site more often.”

A thousand euros is a blow to the neighborhood. “That is quite a lot for a volunteer organization. You get little back from the insurance. You have a considerable deductible and you have to show receipts of everything.”

The neighborhood has reported the police. According to Wil, other neighborhoods must also be extra alert. He has a witness call Shared via social media. “Keep a real eye in the sail, these dark times.”

72 years Leenderweg

The flower parade in Valkenswaard stems from the liberation of the village in September 1944. After years of parades with decorated bicycles and carts, on 17 September 1953 the first flower parade passed through the streets of Valkenswaard. Neighborhood Leenderweg is one of the founders of the Corso.
