A couple from Duinbergen rode around 4.30 pm on the Heistlaan in Knokke-Heist. At a certain moment their vehicle ended up next to the road and in the canal for the time being unknown reasons. The 80-year-old driver could be freed by a bystander. His 76-year-old wife had to be taken out of the car by the emergency services, but all help came too late. The victim died of her injuries on the spot. The driver was transferred to the hospital for care.
The Bruges department of the West Flanders public prosecutor has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the precise circumstances of the incident. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
