There are only 16 teams left in the Champions League. Three of them come from Germany. And since Friday it has been clear who you will meet in the round of 16.
There is a German cracker in the Champions League: FC Bayern meets Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 of the premier class. This was the result of the draw on Friday. The other possible opponent of Bayern, Atlético Madrid, is dealing with city rival Real Madrid. The duels between the reigning German champion and the record champions will be on 4/5. March and 11th/12th March take place. They compete against each other for the fourth and fifth time this season after two league duels and a cup game. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, had a luck, and in the round of 16 with the French surprise team Osc Lille.
The first leg in the German duel takes place in Munich because Bayern cut off less in the group phase and had to take the detour via the play-offs. The decision is then made in Leverkusen a week later. The two Bundesliga duels ended. Bayer won 1-0 in Munich in the DFB Cup and has been a big favorite there ever since.
For the two German top clubs, there were only two opponent options for the Reformed Champions League mode. Instead of two Spanish-German duels, the Bundesliga duel now occurs. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid determine a quarter -finalists in the city derby.
“We will see what is coming. If you say European Cup, you would like to play internationally,” Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl said in advance about the draw and thus expressed a slight preference for Atlético. Leverkusen is dealing with the greatest national rival, but escapes a duel with the defending champion around superstar Kylian Mbappé.
The further tournament tree until the final on May 31 in Munich was also drawn. The winner from Bavaria against Leverkusen will play in the quarter -finals against Inter Milan or Feyenoord Rotterdam. In the semifinals, FC Barcelona or Dortmund would be possible opponents.
The BVB has to deal with a opponent after Sporting Lisbon in the playoffs in the round of 16 with an adversary who is not part of the favorite group. “To be honest, I don’t care who we will play against,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl. As an eleventh of the Bundesliga, Dortmund is currently under great pressure nationally. BVB first plays at home against Lille.
