The European trip of 1st FC Heidenheim has ended dramatically, now the full concentration applies to the Bundesliga relegation struggle. In the play-offs of the Conference League, the team of coach Frank Schmidt against FC Copenhagen was not sufficient for the 2-1 win from the first leg.
At 1: 3 (1: 2, 0: 1), the Heidenheim round of 16, the Eastern Talent dreams burst through the goal of Rodrigo Huescas (114.).
The table-16 had. After a weak first half and a nightmare start, the Bundesliga fought back into the game with great morality after the break. The Brazilian Leo Scienza (73.) forced the extension with a directly converted free kick.
Previously, Amin Chiakha (37th) and the future Gladbacher Kevin Diks deservedly shot the guests in the lead by penalty (53.).
Copenhagen better initially
For Copenhagen it is now possible against Vitória Guimarães or Chelsea FC. Another duel with the London Top Club, which was a guest in the league in Heidenheim, would have liked the Heidenheim fans and those responsible. But instead of further European Cup highlights, Heidenheim only remains gray everyday life: the club is seven points behind the saving bank.
On Sunday (3:30 p.m./DAZN) the fight against relegation at RB Leipzig continues. Then there is 120 minutes in the bones and a bitter defeat.
The leadership of the guests from Copenhagen had been at home on Thursday evening: Heidenheim was able to thank Frank Feller that the first thing was zero. Feller, who had received the preference in front of Stammtorwart Kevin Müller as in the first leg, parried outstanding against Elias Achouri (31st), but shortly later he was beaten: Chiakha scored after a Diks flank.
Heidenheim in round two as replaced
Coach Schmidt relied on an increase in the second half – similar to Denmark, but hope did not last long. The video evidence exposed a tackle by Jonas Föhrenbach against Giorgi Gotscholeschwili as clearly penalty. Foreign defender Diks safely converted.
After all, Heidenheim reared up and came to great opportunities due to the hapless winter access Budu Siwsiwadse (62nd) and Marvin Pieringer (68th). The hosts rewarded Scienza with a directly converted free kick goal from the penalty area and had the decision on the foot, but failed on the post (89.). So it went into extra time – with the better end for Copenhagen. A late goal from Pieringer, which would have been enough for a penalty shootout, did not count because of handball.
