The seven-time Grand Slam tournament winner Venus Williams returns to the tennis tour. The 44-year-old American received a wildcard for the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells in March, as the organizer said.
The sister of the already receded tennis star Serena Williams had recently contested tennis tournaments almost a year ago. Venus Williams had already left in the first round both in Indian Wells and at the subsequent at the Masters tournament in Miami. In the world rankings, the former number one crashed to 974.
In addition to Williams, Brazil’s top talent João Fonseca was also considered with a wildcard. The 18-year-old won the clay court tournament in Buenos Aires last Sunday before leaving at the home tournament in Rio de Janeiro in the first round.
