Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus auctioned his 2005 Banksy painting “Crude Oil (Vetriano)”.
Blink 182 bassist Mark Hoppus is an enthusiastic art collector. In the past twelve years, his collection has also included the painting “Crude Oil (Vettriano)” by the groundbreaking British artist Banksy. The musician now wants to sell this.
“We have loved this painting since the moment we saw it”
The 91 by 122 centimeter painting shows a dancing couple on the beach. A butler keeps the couple trying to make a umbrella over its heads. In the background you can see two men in yellow protective suits, which handle a barrel full of poison waste. The street artist Banksy created this political work in 2005 and gave the painting “Singing Butler” by the Scottish painter Jack Vettriano from 1992. In the original version, instead of the two men in the full body suits you can see a housemaid, just like that Butler holds an umbrella in the air.
The auction of “Crude Oil (Vetriano)” is scheduled to take place on March 4 and is carried out by the Sotheby’s auction house. Hoppus also shares a statement on the painting on the company’s website: “We have loved this painting since the moment we saw it. Unmistakably Banksy, but different. We bought it because we loved it. It has accompanied our family in the past twelve years. “
Among other things, the proceeds should serve a good cause
The bassist now wants to sell his precious treasure to enrich his art collection for the works of young artists: to enrich his art. At the same time, part of the proceeds should also serve a good cause and will benefit the California Fire Foundation and Medical Charities in Los Angeles. Banksy’s work should go away at the auction for around three to five million pounds. This would be up to six million euros.
