In 2019, Egan Bernal won the Tour de France, in 2022 he suffered a serious accident. Recently, he finally found the road to success – and promptly injured himself again on Monday.
Rad star Egan Bernal has suffered a bitter setback on the way to old strength. The 2019 Tour-de France winner fell on Monday at the Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior in southern Spain on Monday. The result: Bernal had to be taken to hospital. His team Ineos Grenadiers published the diagnosis of the 28-year-old in the evening. He suffered a broken collarbone, it said.
Bernal himself was combative despite the accident. “I felt really strong and of course I am sad that I fell,” he said in the message on the website of his team. At the same time, the race gave him a lot of confidence and motivation to continue working hard. The season is still long, said Bernal.
However, the downtime of the Colombian remains unclear. Ineos said on social media: “Our team doctor is currently with him and we will give an update in due course.” In March, Bernal originally planned to complete the Strade Bianche Einstagen race and the Tirreno-Adriatico tour. In May he wanted to start at Giro d’Italia.
Only ten days before his fall at Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior had the cycling professional celebrated a great success: at the Colombian championships, he won both the street race and time trial – his first victory since his serious training accident three years ago. At that time he crashed into a standing bus at high speed. The accident would have ended almost fatally for Bernal. Eight months later, however, he had already returned to racing.
