No other of Neil Young albums achieved such a broad effect, and that was not only due to the US number and “Heart of Gold”.
Rarely, the shouted the extreme tamered out the extreme as wonderful as here: Simple meets multi-layered, tragedies on humor, rumbling skirt on romance, realism on hippie dreams.
Wisdom of Neil Young
And the wisdom of “A Man Need a Maid”, “Old Man” and the “The Needle And The Damage Done”, which is well -rehearsed live.
The circumstances for the recordings in Nashville were anything but promising: Because of a back disease, Young usually had to wear a support corset. The restriction cannot be heard of your touching vocals.
That is why Neil Young refuses to play live “Harvest” live
For years, tour operators and promoters have been in vain to move Neil Young to a “Harvest” tour. As the singer-songwriter confirmed on request some time ago, he received a rich million amount several times to play the most popular songs of his great career-including the only mega hit of his music life, “Heart of Gold”.
In an interview with Conan O’Brien, Young confirmed the immoral offer for him. For him, however, it was nonsense to play through “Harvest” on tour completely in order to use some nostalgia creates. “Almost everyone who can be heard on ‘Harvest’ has since died,” he said. “I can’t do that. Wouldn’t plants be much better instead of harvesting? (How about Planting Instead of Harvesting?) “
The Stray Gator is no longer available
Although the guest stars, which can be heard on Young’s legendary record (Ua David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt and Graham Nash), are still very alive, all members of Young Band from this period have now passed away.
Criticism: “Harvest (50th Anniversary Edition)”
This bestseller is a good example of how music is prematurely condemned from the expectations of your time. Yes, the Stray Gators just didn’t have as much meat on the bone as Crazy Horse. And what is this strange orchestra in the middle of it? Wasn’t “Heart of Gold” too banal? And anyway, why couldn’t there be CSN & Y again? There was also the funny assessment that “Are You Ready for the Country?” Is the strongest of the ten songs. He is one of the weaker ones, in addition to the real lame “Southern Man” Reprise “Alabama”.
The baroque folk “There’s a World” is more of a world in itself. Just like that of the junkies of “The Needle and the Damage Done”, even then a lonely solo. This is based on the solo concert versions (BBC 1971) of other songs. Also a dramatically forced “Old Man” only proves what good choice Young had with the Stray Gator, literally grown in Nashvillevillevon Quadrafonic Studio chief Elliot Mazer. The, well, butter-soft bass drum by the minimalist Kenny Buttrey and Ben Keiths Sublime Pedal Steel (“Out on the Weekend”!), Are worth the ticket.
Only the studio band around Jack Nitzsche and Background Engel like Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor drew this friendly country anlitz, which contradicts the feeling behind it. Not only in the title song Neil Young gives the Happy-Sad prototype par excellence. And his opus Magnum has remained “a man Needs a maid”. When the orchestra lifts, it is as if you were sitting in the film that the young look in the song to fall in love with this actress (which really existed: Carrie Snodgress). Often scanned as misogynia, the song only puts a man who is afraid of being hurt. The most interesting part of the birthday edition is likely to be a previously unpublished two-hour documentary of the sessions, which unfortunately could not be examined in advance.
