The young dancer Rosa makes her debut in a Burlesque show and is enthusiastic about both the form and the content of the genre. “I think it’s a fascinating world and great to look at Fay,” she says. “The point is that you decide how you can express your femininity and sexuality – not within the standards of what belongs or may, but in your own way.”
Burlesqueveteraan Miss Behave, who takes care of the direction and guidance of Fay’s Show, also sees the genre as a counterpower against growing conservatism. “Our mission is to promote diversity and to take people with our shows in a different world,” she says. “That they think: wow, this also exists! I really believe that we can make the world a little more beautiful.”
The Amsterdam Burlesque Festival will be held on 15 and 16 February in the Westerunie in Amsterdam.
