Finally a victory in a second division newcomer: thanks to Davie Selke, HSV scored three points at Prussia Münster – that was not successful for a long time. In the third minute of stoppage time, the striker, who wore a mask due to a broken chef, hit 2: 1 (1: 1) victory, who initially promotes Hamburg to the top of the table.

The HSV at an promoted team – that was a combination in the past two seasons, which has a large part in the fact that the former Bundesliga dino continues to try to return to the upper house. Before the current season, the HSV had only won two out of 15 possible points from the past five games in a second division newcomer – in the end, this misery was crucial for missing the goals.

Frenkert does it better than Selke at first

And even this season, the first appearance at a promoted team was not desirable, with a 1-1 draw at SSV Ulm, Hamburg could not really improve the balance. That should now change in Münster – which turned out to be extremely difficult from the start. The HSV had big problems coming into play themselves and also with the many high balls that were the means of choice among the hosts.

But coach Merlin Polzin also has a specialist in the air: Davie Selke. In the 19th minute the striker was dangerous for the first time, but after a corner ball he headed past the opposing goal just from four meters. Five minutes later there was a corner again, this time the ball landed in the goal – but on the other side. Lukas Frenkert extended the ball that hit Miro Muheim on his face and fell from there into the net to the Münster leaders (24th).

The gate to 1-0 for Münster

Selke shows that he can do it

The HSV was on the point of leaving points against a promoted man. This impression solidified when Etienne Amenyido met after one of Torge Paetow’s numerous 40-meter racks-the goal did not count due to an offside position (38.).

This situation was also an example that there was little to get with a combination game in the first half. Consequently, the HSV also needed a perfect flank from the half field to meet itself. Jonas Meffert hit the ball exactly on the head of Selke, who this time hit the long corner of the Münster goal, and also at a perfect time (45.+3). It was the last action before the break.

Discussions about possible HSV elf

After the break, the game became significantly more handsome, which was primarily due to the substitution of Hamburg’s Jean -Luc Dompé, which gave the game technical finesse and lots of good ideas – despite difficult space. And so Marco Richter had the first great chance after a flat combination, but Johannes Schenk was still able to steer his somewhat central conclusion on the crossbar (54.).

Shortly afterwards it got really hectic. Jano Ter Horst brought Adam Karabec down in his own penalty area, there was a penalty for Hamburg (57th). It was a hard action by the SCP defender, after which the decision could have stopped – referee Wolfgang Haslberger corrected himself in the view of the video images. The reason was probably that Ter Horst also played the ball with both legs.

Münster and Hamburg with top opportunities for the leadership

This scene changed the game because it was a kind of wake -up call for Münster, which had rely too much on defending and long balls. From this followed by far the best attack by the hosts, after which David Kinsombi came to a conclusion from twelve meters, but passed the ball a few centimeters on the post (65th).

In direct return, Schenk had to save against judge (66.), a lively back and forth developed. Then Dompé had the next good opportunity to get into which the SCP goalkeeper was thrilling again, but the ball landed on the head of Ransford Königsdörffer – Frenkert, however, saved the ball shortly before his own goal line (70th).

In the 84th minute, the hoe from Königsdörffer was almost the part of the body that gave the HSV a victory – but the head of the foot from Schenk prevented it. And then it was another foot tip that almost took care of the lead. Paetow steered an actually harmless flank to his own inner post and from there the ball just turned out of the goal (88th).

Selke is fouled and hits the victory

But in added time there was still redemption. After a ring fight with frenkert, Selke went down, again Haslberger decided on a penalty – and this time he stayed with it. Selke competed himself and scored confidently to 2: 1 (90.+4) – it was happy due to the time and arrival, but in the end.

Selke then evaluated the victory in the Sportschau interview as a symbol for the team’s mature process: “We believed that we can win this game until the end. Huge compliment, you can clearly see our development as a troop.”

Sara Schwedmann, Sportschau, 07.02.2025 9:26 p.m.

Due to the victory, the HSV not only ended the misery against promoters, but also one in front of a few spectators. The Hamburgers had previously won eight second division games, in which there were fewer than 20,000 fans in the stadium (in Münster there were 12,000).

For the last time there was a victory in front of a small backdrop at the end of the 2022/23 season – the HSV won in Sandhausen, already cheered the supposed ascent including a place storm and did not make it. After the end of these two miseries at Underdogs, the HSV could really celebrate the return to the Bundesliga in the end.

The entire Hamburg replacement bank storms on the lawn at Selkes late.
