Mainz sports director Christian Heidel said: “During our collaboration at Mainz 05, we have been able to experience many special moments together since 2010. He successfully denied several emotional relegation fights both as a trainer and as a sports director, was able to move directly into the group phase of the Europa League in the club history for the first time and also help the club in a new role as sports director and consultant with his football expertise. In addition, with his cheerful way, Martin fits perfectly into the open, warm culture of our club and our city. Combine more than ten years of good cooperation – Martin will always remain my personal friend and a friend of the club. ”
Last summer Schmidt had given up his post as sports director for private reasons-ex-professional Niko Bungert took over, and Meikel Schönweitz was also used as a technical director. Schmidt, who had only trained the second and then the first team of Mainz between 2010 and 2017, justified his decision with a family of illness in the family in his Swiss homeland. “After so many years, this farewell is associated with a lot of emotions for me. A long and common story that began as a U23 head coach, pulling me through Europe as a professional head coach and recently celebrating two incredible classes as sports director together with the 05 family and the whole city. So it is now a good time to thank everyone and say goodbye. Mainz has shaped my life and with a backpack full of experiences, successes and unforgettable moments of joy, I can now consider new projects and challenges. Merci, dear Mainz, ”said Schmidt.
