Borussia Dortmund somehow wants to save a weak season so far. Niko Kovač should now judge it as a trainer. The Croatian found clear words at its first press conference.
Ranking in the league, already excreted in the DFB Cup, in which Champions League misses the direct round of 16: Borussia Dortmund’s season has been read rather than right. Trainer Nuri Şahin had to go, his successor is now Niko Kovač, whom the club officially presented at a press conference on Tuesday.
“My first impression is very positive. I am very happy that we can be here,” said the new coach at the start. Most recently, he had trained VfL Wolfsburg, but had been released from his tasks in the Lower Saxony in March 2024. “We are very well recovered after ten months of break, very motivated and we are happy that we can again work in the Bundesliga at a very large club like BVB,” he said.
Kovač became clear about the Emre Can personnel. The Captain of Dortmund is often considered a symbol of the weak appearances of the team. But he won’t lose the bandage under his new coach. “He remains the captain,” said Kovač. He sees the player “as a leader, he is a German international, he is a player who played in big clubs, we all know.”
Kovač also commented on Niklas Süle. The long -time international was recently injured and has not yet been able to find its shape permanently at BVB. When Kovač trained FC Bayern, Süle was still a regular among the Munich team. The BVB trainer believes in his old and new protégé again. “When the Niki is healthy, I claim that this is a player for the 2026 World Cup,” said Kovač.
What the 53-year-old thinks about the Dortmund winter transfers and how he wants to get BVB back on track can be read in the ticker below.
4.13 p.m.: Kovač also explains that he wishes that the club will achieve even more this season than is currently being booked. Then the press conference is over.
4:12 pm: Kovač says that he will live in the hotel first. “Nothing will change until summer,” he says.
4:11 p.m.: Kehl comments on the departure of Donyell painting. Aston Villa had a high offer, painting also wanted to change due to his contractual situation. “The player was no longer really with his head at Borussia Dortmund,” said Kehl.
4.10 p.m.: Ricken explains that you have deliberately committed yourself to the term of one and a half years with Kovač. The topic was through after a minute. Man still wanted to get “the maximum sporting success”. It is also important for players that clarity is in the coaching position regarding the new season.
16:08: Kovač about his brother Robert, whom he brought to Dortmund as an assistant coach: “He is the most loyal friend, brother you can have.” He says about his second assistant Filip Tapalović that he is like a brother for him.
4:05 p.m.: Kovač is thrown directly into the cold water in Dortmund. “It is clear that it is not optimal.” As a trainer, you can never expect to have summer or winter preparation. “We won’t reinvent a lot now,” he says. They want to give the players the necessary self -confidence.
4:03 p.m.: It’s about Niklas Süle, which Kovač is already training in Munich. “I am pleased that I work with Niki again,” said the new coach. 16.02 a.m.: If Tullberg, who put an emotional jubilee at the weekend against Heidenheim, is asked in an emotional point of view, Kovač is asked. “I can do that too,” he says, but also admits when it comes to a sprint in manner of the interim trainer, maybe not quite as fit as the much younger Tullberg.
