The World Cup dress rehearsal in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was overshadowed by a bad training fall. Now an athlete is in a coma.

The Czech ski racer Tereza Nova has been put into an induced coma after her training fall in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 26-year-old suffered a serious head injury. The Czech Ski Association said she was operated on at the Murnau accident clinic to reduce brain swelling.

Nova fell on Friday during downhill training on the Kandahar slope. A rescue helicopter first took her to a nearby clinic for further examinations, as the Czech association announced.

This weekend, the last women’s speed races before the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria (February 4th to 16th) will be held on the Kandahar slope. The Italian Federica Brignone secured victory in the downhill on Saturday. However, the race had to be interrupted for a longer period after Austrian Nina Ortlieb also fell.

Ortlieb was treated on the slopes and brought down to the valley in a rescue sled. An examination in a hospital in Garmisch confirmed that the vice world champion suffered a fractured lower leg.
