Prinz Pi about his album WEST BERLIN, the ups and downs of society and wishes for the future.
Prince Pi – a “social observer and word acrobat”. This is what the rapper describes himself on his Instagram profile. He works as an artist who transforms his clever and idiosyncratic observations into lines and then into musical works. Now Pi has been busy again and has been working on a new album – a record dedicated to his birthplace, West Berlin. We visited the musician to find out what exactly the upcoming LP is supposed to be about.
About the “latent threat situation”
“It was a pretty strange situation that the country was not only divided, but that there was this little enclave of West Berlin in the middle of East Germany that was surrounded by a wall and that was of course completely different from that Vicinity. But it was also different than the rest of West Germany,” the musician tells us in the interview. He talks about the place on the Spree, which was not only permeated by movements of creativity and freedom in the 80s – it was also a place whose residents always had a certain fear on their minds. Even today, Prince Pi feels restless again and the “stress of dealing with this latent threat situation”. Just like when he was younger. That’s what the record, which will be released on March 14, 2025, should be about.
Space for art
In the conversation, the “Keine Liebe” interpreter also explains to us why he chose the CIA base on Berlin’s Teufelsberg as the album cover and what bridge he creates between the image and the musical content. Pi also tells us which two supporting acts will accompany him on his planned WEST BERLIN tour in September 2025. He also talks about what future plans are still floating around in his head and how important it is to “give art a space that can stimulate conversations.” What his family thinks of his art and why he recommends young people to “just throw away all their cell phones” – you can find out this and more in the video interview.
