The hack could take place at the Eindhoven University of Technology in mid -January because the attackers had the stolen login details of at least one employee and one student. With this they were able to log in to the Windows domain of the university through various accounts. Insiders tell the Volkskrant.

Once the hackers were inside, their activities on the computer servers were noticed fairly quickly. The university subsequently took the network offline in the night from Saturday to Sunday 12 January and no more education was possible.

The exact circumstances of the attack is still being investigated in collaboration with cyber security company Fox-IT, can be read in the newspaper. The university has shared information about the hack with other educational institutions. Partly as a result, the Radboud University Nijmegen has taken measures to secure the logging in with extra authentication.
