Residents of the municipality of Oss will soon have priority for social rental housing. The mayor and aldermen want to be one of the first municipalities to oblige housing associations to allocate half of the social rental homes to people with a local connection. “They fish behind the net too often.”

According to Housing Councilor Sidney van den Bergh, it is time for our own residents to be given priority. “It is really necessary that this arrangement is introduced. Too often we see people waiting years for a rental home in their village, but ultimately missing out because the home is assigned to someone from outside the village. “

Under the new scheme, the Osse housing associations BrabantWonen and Mooiland are obliged to allocate half of the newly built social housing to people with a local connection.

The scheme must apply in all centers of the municipality. The new housing ordinance will be submitted to the municipal council in February. If the municipal council approves this, residents will have a better chance of finding a rental home.

Different for owner-occupied homes
Own residents are not given priority for owner-occupied homes. The municipality wants to encourage residents to continue living in their own environment through the so-called collective private commissioning (CPO).

With a CPO, a group of residents buys land and together decides how they want to build homes on that land and with which parties they want to do so.

The municipal council will meet on Thursday, February 27, to discuss the priority for social rental housing.
