Wijk aan Zee is the global center of chess these days. The Tata Steel chess tournament will be played in De Moriaan for the 87th time. Not only the sports hall, but the entire village is captivated by chess. Every reason for NH Sport to visit Wijk aan Zee today!
In De Moriaan, presenter Erik-Jan Brinkman meets tournament director Jeroen van den Berg, whom he challenges to a short game of chess. You will see a report from café De Zon where the games of the grandmasters are analyzed via a livestream.
A little further on, Brinkman enters Ristorante Tarantella. Owner Riccardo Sotera shows a photo of himself with former world champion Magnus Carlsen. “Magnus has been eating here since he was thirteen. This was his favorite table,” Sotera points to a spot in the corner. The Norwegian is missing from the field of participants this year.

Sotera also has a framed photo of himself and Edgar Davids hanging in the shop. “Edgar is a chess enthusiast. He came to Wijk aan Zee to watch and meet Magnus Carlsen. The pit bull Edgar Davids was somewhat nervous at first,” says Sotera, born in Sicily, who is a fan of Juventus. Davids played football for the club from Turin between 1998 and 2004.

In this broadcast you will also see a report about the handball players of VZV. The club from ‘t Veld is at the top of the Premier League and reached the third round of the European Cup in which the Greek Ionias was too strong. The big question is of course: how can a team from such a small village perform so well?
And there is good news about cyclist Niek Hoornsman. Last March he made a huge splash in the first stage of Olympia’s Tour. The rider from Wieringerwerf is now back on his bike and has found a new team: Metec cycling team.
You can see the first TV broadcast of NH Sport every Monday at 5:10 PM, after which it is repeated every half hour.
