FC Augsburg lets assistant coach Jacob Friis go. As the Fuggerstädter announced, the 48-year-old decided to take over as Finland’s national coach. “After open and goal-oriented discussions,” the FCA complied with the Dane’s wishes. Since Jess Thorup’s assistant’s contract was valid for a longer period of time, the club will receive a transfer fee, although the amount was not disclosed. Friis says goodbye after the game against 1. FC Heidenheim (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).
“It is an honor for me to be able to work as Finland’s national coach. Therefore, I was very happy to accept this offer. I am very grateful to everyone in charge at FC Augsburg for giving me the opportunity to gain experience in the Bundesliga and for letting me out of my contract during the current season. “I am of course looking forward to the new, responsible task as national coach and wish FCA much success for the rest of the season and beyond,” said Friis, who has worked in Augsburg since November 2023. His tasks will be redistributed within the coaching team in the future.

In Finland, Friis follows Markku Kanerva, who had to leave at the end of November after 89 games. Under him, the Finnish national team lost all six games in the Nations League in Group 2 of League B against England, Greece and Ireland. The team around Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky and former Schalke player Teemu Pukki remained pointless and was relegated to League C as bottom of the group with a goal difference of 2:13.
