As assistant coach, Sandro Wagner plays an important role in the national team. He is now making a promise to the DFB team and national coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Sandro Wagner plans to remain assistant coach of the German national team for at least another year. As the 37-year-old explained in an interview with “Spiegel”, he is ruling out a change before the 2026 World Cup. Wagner also emphasized that he doesn’t want to take on the role of assistant permanently: “At the moment it’s perfect for me, I can get a lot from the top people around me. The 2026 World Cup is a cool goal.”

Last year, Wagner was traded both at TSG Hoffenheim and most recently as a possible successor to Nuri Şahin at Borussia Dortmund. DFB sports director Rudi Völler had already stated last September that Wagner would remain an assistant coach until at least 2026 and would not move to a Bundesliga club early. The former national player took over the job as assistant coach in the DFB team in September 2023.

One thing is certain: Wagner is aiming for a head coach role. “I feel that this job suits me perfectly. And my years as a coach so far have been really good,” he said and added: “If someone reads this now, they can say: This guy has to prove himself first! I agree . I want to prove it. But I have basic trust in myself.”

Before his involvement with the DFB, Wagner coached the then fourth division club Spielvereinigung Unterhaching and led them to promotion in 2023. Next week he will begin his training to become a football teacher.
