HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – The Association of German Shipowners (VDR) praises stricter international rules for the transport of charcoal by shipping. On the occasion of the development, the Federal Association from Hamburg is also calling on charcoal manufacturers to respect the requirements that will be binding for shipping from 2026. This emerges from a communication from the VDR.
The regulation of the UN shipping organization IMO from London stipulates, among other things, that charcoal must be stored outdoors for a certain period of time before being transported on the ship. This is intended to reduce the risk of fires on ships.
According to the VDR, fires broke out on several container ships during charcoal transport. The director of dangerous goods at the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, Manuel Weber, said further rules would have to follow. “Above all, we need specific charcoal packaging that counteracts any self-heating or self-ignition.”/lkm/DP/zb
