Sudan’s army recaptured the town of Wad Madani from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday, the AP news agency reported, citing Sudanese officials. The city was captured by the RSF in December 2023. Tens of thousands fled the city at the time, located about one hundred kilometers southeast of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
The Sudanese government is talking about the “liberation” of Wad Madani, estimated to be the eighth largest city in the country. Images show soldiers and civilians celebrating in the streets of the city. The RSF has not yet responded to the recapture of Wad Madani. Earlier this week, the United States accused the rebel militia of genocide. Sudanese from the Masalit nation in particular are victims of violence by the RSF.
The conflict between the government army and the RSF has been going on for almost two years. According to the United Nations more than twelve million displaced people, approximately a quarter of Sudan’s total population. Famine also occurs during the conflict and there is sexual violence. More than 28,000 people died during the conflict.
